Does a holiday season full of parties, celebrations, and seasonal get-togethers sound fun, exhausting, and exciting all at the same time? If so, you may be an introvert. While you may love to socialize, you may be an introvert if you get tired after big social gatherings. This certainly doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a holiday full of family, friends, and parties. It simply means that you need to pay closer attention to my energy levels during this busy holiday season.
Today, we are going to talk about 6 survival strategies for the introvert this holiday season.
I hope you can use these tips to pace your energy levels over the holidays.
1. Pair holiday parties with cozy, quiet nights. Do you have a holiday party on the calendar this week? Be sure to schedule a quiet night or two to yourself. This will keep you more balanced during the week, and give you more energy to enjoy the party.
2. Check in with yourself before and during the gathering. Self-care is important always, but it tends to really matter during this busy season. Before the party, identify what you are most looking forward to during the party – set an intention for the event. During the party, remind yourself of that intention, and pay attention how you are feeling. Be kind to yourself if you are too tired to stay at the gathering the entire time.
3. Spend quality time with friends and family in more intimate settings. You can still enjoy friends and family this season, but choose a setting that feels less overwhelming. Invite a few friends to a café and exchange gifts. Make cookies with family at home. Enjoy a holiday concert with a few co-workers.
4. Prioritize big gatherings. If you know that more than one big party per week is too much for you, then prioritize your invitations! And, if you miss a party, make a point to spend quality time with that friend in a different setting.
5. Practice gratitude. Practicing gratitude throughout the season can bring joy to the introvert and the extrovert! You can get an extra boost of energy by remembering how grateful you are for your friends, family, or co-workers.
6. Keep your stress in check with good nutrition and physical activity. Your physical health can be a stress reliever or stress instigator. Head off stress by eating plenty of fruits and veggies, getting whole grains, and drinking water. And, a great way to feel great and take time for yourself to exercise daily– even if it’s a brisk walk around the neighborhood to enjoy the lights!
